Pride 2020 hits different than years past. Normally, we’d be attending parades, parties and events all month long. However, this pandemic has put a pause on all social gatherings and Pride has relocated to online. For those who haven’t celebrated or gone to a Pride event, this is a special time for people in the LGBTQ+ community. It’s a time where we come together, recognize the fearless leaders who’ve come before us and push for social change. The LGBTQ+ community has come so far since the Stonewall Riots of 1969—from the legalization of gay marriage to the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to protection of all sexual orientations and gender identities against wrongful termination. However, there is still progress to be made. Currently, less than half of U.S. states have bans against conversion therapy for minors and the Armed Forces has the legal right to openly discriminate against transgender individuals. And let’s not forget the high murder rates transwomen of color face, around the world and on U.S. soil.
Pride is a time where we can come together to make real and lasting change, plus it’s a great excuse to dance our butts off. This year, we may not be gathering in crowds, but there are plenty of virtual opportunities for having fun during Pride. Why not plan a parade of your own and groove to some of the best Pride anthems from years present and past.
