Drag is more popular than ever before, thanks in large part to “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Before “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the drag world was very insular and today, it’s practically mainstream. Because it’s become so popular, it’s allowed performers who don’t fit the mold of a “traditional drag queen” to rise in the ranks and gain a fandom on social media. In today’s day and age, drag has evolved to be more inclusive, more intersectional and more artistic than ever before. Meet seven drag performers who continue to push those boundaries in the gallery below and let us know your favorite drag performer in the comments section on social media.
Landon Cider
You might recognize Landon Cider from the third season of “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula,” where he swept the competition and became the first drag king to win a televised drag competition. Cider is a groundbreaking performer and artist who consistently proves that AFAB (assigned female at birth) deserve a place on the drag stage.
Eva Young
Eva Young is a talented multi-tasker based in Chicago who’s balancing pharmacy school by day and drag by night. Young creates stunning looks that frequently pay homage to her heritage and throughout the pandemic, has been fighting on the front lines as a health care worker.
Abhora
Another Dragula alumni, Abhora excels at spooky, character-based drag. Personally, she’s one of my favorite queens who’ve competed on a reality television show because she’s so great at creating out of the box creatures with her makeup, wardrobe and styling.
Imp Kid
Imp Kid gained a following on Instagram for her bold and cartoon inspired makeup looks. She’s since taken a political stance with her drag, showing that trans women should have their voices heard in the drag scene.
Cheddar Gorgeous
Cheddar Gorgeous is the queen of alien drag. Her looks, which almost always feature a bald head, transport us to another dimension and there’s no end to what this performer can create.
Hungry
Hungry is one of those queens who transcends the drag world and whose makeup literally belongs in a museum. Hungry has been featured in a number of fashion magazines because of her unique approach to makeup, which focuses on symmetry, shapes and textures.
Florida Man
I’m just going to say, if you haven’t seen Florida Man performing an Ariana Grande song while dressed as Lord Voldemort, you’re seriously missing out. Also Florida Man might be one of the best drag names I’ve ever heard.
