For many of us, we grew up with 1991’s “The Addams Family” and 1993’s “Addams Family Values.” Anjelica Huston was our Morticia and Cristina Ricci was our Wednesday. However, before the Addams’ ever graced the big screen, there was the wildly popular silver screen adaptation. In 1964, “The Addams Family” premiered on ABC and featured the macabre gang we all know and love.
The series was created and developed by David Levy, airing for two seasons and 64 episodes. It starred actor John Astin as patriarch Gomez Addams and Carolyn Jones as matriarch Morticia Addams. The show’s iconic theme song was composed and sung by Vic Mizzy, who’d written a number of scores for television shows of the time period. It’s renowned for its use of the harpsichord and finger snapping. The show aired until 1966, however it’s since been available for syndication and streaming on a variety of platforms over the years. The cast did, however, reconvene for a special, “Halloween with the New Addams Family,” which aired eleven years after the initial cancelation in 1977.
It may not be “The Addams Family” you grew up with, however, “The Addams Family” TV series is still iconic in its own right. Plus, it has some of the best quotes in all of television history.
