We know you love witch movies, but what about TV shows? Over the years, dozens of television shows have depicted witches. However, only a fair few belong in our must see list. “American Horror Story: Coven”
For the third season of “American Horror Story,” creator Ryan Murphy chose to center the theme on a coven of witches. This went off with great success, thanks to stellar performances by Jessica Lange, Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe and a guest appearance by the Reigning Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll herself, Stevie Nicks. In fact, this season was so beloved, they even brought back the cast for “American Horror Story: Apocalypse.”
“Sabrina, The Teenage Witch”
Growing up, “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch” was my jam. Based on the Archie Comics series by the same name, this show followed a 16 year old witch who learns to use her magical powers with the help of her aunts and their magical talking cat Salem. The show ran for an impressive seven seasons and spawned a number of video games, as well as an animated series.
“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”
Based on the same comic book stories as the previous entry, “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” has a considerably darker and edgier tone. This series ran for two seasons on Netflix and is a coming-of-age story featuring elements of horror and witchcraft. The role of Sabrina Spellman is played by Kiernan Shipka, who earned a number of Teen Choice Award nominations for her performance.
“Charmed”
“Charmed” follows three extremely powerful good witches who used their combined “Power of Three” to fight evil beings, such as demons and warlocks. The show ran for an impressive eight seasons and the original cast consisted of Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano. However, when Doherty’s character was killed off in the third season, she was replaced by Rose McGowan for the final five seasons of the show. “Charmed” attracted a huge cult following and inspired a 2018 reboot, which is expected to have it’s fourth season premiere in 2021.
“Bewitched”
The classic witch television series, “Bewitched” premiered in 1964 and ran for eight seasons. The show follows a witch who marries a mortal man and tries to be a normal suburban housewife. The film took inspiration from earlier witch media, including the 1942 film “I Married a Witch” and the 1958 film “Bell, Book and Candle.” The series inspired the 2005 film of the same name, which follows an actor (played by Will Ferrell) who realizes that his co-star (played by Nicole Kidman) is an actual witch.
“Salem”
This supernatural horror television show took loose inspiration from the Salem witch trials of the 17th century. The show follows a powerful witch named Mary Sibley, who controls the Salem Witch Trials by creating hysteria amongst the Puritans while working to summon the Devil. Many of the characters were based on real people involved in the Salem Witch Trials, including Captain John Alden, Tituba and Mercy Lewis.
“A Discovery of Witches”
Based on the book series written by author Deborah Harkness, the story follows a historian and witch who goes into the world of magic to unravel it’s secrets about magical beings. Along the way, she must work alongside a vampire (the sworn enemy of witches) to protect a bewitched manuscript and solve it’s mysteries. The series has released two seasons thus far and stars Australian actress Teresa Palmer.
“Motherland: Fort Salem”
This show premiered on Freeform in 2020 and follows a trio of witches who enlist in the U.S. Army. In this show, the world is woman-dominated and the U.S. ended the persecution of witches 300 years ago during the Salem Witch Trials. The witches use their magic to fight against a terrorist organization, which is a group of witches that opposes the military conscription of witches. It’s been renewed for a second season.
“The Magicians”
Although not technically referred to as witches and wizards, “The Magicians” still deserves to be on this list. The show follows a graduate student who enrolls in a university to learn to be a magician. The show ran for an impressive five seasons and was nominated for a number of Saturn Awards.
“Good Witch”
This show follows a mother-daughter duo who’re good witches. Shortly into the series, the mother and daughter welcome in two of the town’s newest residents: a doctor and his troubled son. The show was renewed for a seventh season, which will premiere in May 2021.
