The Halloween season is upon us and this year, instead of going out to parties, we’ll be spending the night in watching our favorite movies. Honestly, I’ve been doing this for years and it’s my favorite way to celebrate the best holiday of the year. However, for those of you who are party animals and new to this whole “staying in” thing, you might be looking for some recommendations for spooky season. Take a look at our ranking of nine of the most popular Halloween movies in the gallery below, then let us know if we included your favorite Halloween movie on our list in the comments section on social media.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
This TV movie is a timeless classic and although we’re not likely to rewatch it this season, it’s something everyone has to see at least once.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
This movie came out last year and it’s definitely made me want to reread these short stories, which helped to define my love of horror movies during childhood.
Terrifier (2016)
Bet you’re surprised to see this movie on our list. But it takes place on Halloween and honestly, it’s a must see for ever self-proclaimed horror fanatic.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Regarded as one of the greatest indie films of all time, the climax of this dark psychological thriller happens on Halloween and we’ll never look at Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” the same way again.
Halloweentown (1998)
If you haven’t seen this film, did you even have a childhood? This Disney Channel Original Film premiered in 1998 and made us wish that we could all move to Halloweentown.
Trick ‘r Treat (2007)
You may not be familiar with “Trick ‘r Treat,” however, this anthology horror film is certainly worth the watch. This film centers on four Halloween stories that are woven together by Sam, an unusual trick or treater dressed in a burlap mask who enforces the rules of Halloween.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Many have debated for decades whether this Tim Burton classic is a Halloween or Christmas film. Why can’t it be both? This film made us fall in love with the kooky, ooky and spooky characters, making us wonder when we’d find the Jack to our Sally.
Halloween (1978)
Arguably the greatest Halloween horror movie of all time, this 1978 slasher turned the genre on it’s head. If you haven’t seen “Halloween,” stop whatever you’re doing and watch it ASAP.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Picking the number one Halloween movie was tough, but I had to go with my gut. If there’s any movie that I can watch year after year and never get tired of, it’s “Hocus Pocus.” Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker made this film a cult classic, rattling off some of the most quotable lines in cinema history. It’s hard to believe that this film had mixed reviews at the box office, as I can’t tell you how many times I watched it on ABC Family. The film’s sequel is currently in the works and set to premiere exclusively on Disney+, and when that day comes, I’ll be one of the first to stream it.
